Contract No 1:

Ashton-under-Lyne Railway Station:

Main Contractor: Galliford Rail Projects:

This contract involved the removal of the entrance canopy leading onto the main platforms.
As can be seen from the picture the station was reasonably busy, so the works had to be carried out during the evening when the station was closed.
Work commenced at approximately 11.30pm after the last train had passed through the station.

During the initial discussions with the main contractor it was decided this work would not suit hand demolition methods, instead we decided to use a small rubber tracked hydraulic excavator fitted with a demolition attachment, the only problem being there was no direct access for anything bigger than a large wheelbarrow.
Eventually in agreement with Railtrack, we protected a section of rail line a little way down the track, removed a small area of fencing, and travelled the excavator to the work area causing no damage at all.
The program of works had given us 5 nights to complete the contract, due to the methods used the work was complete by the Thursday night (our 4th night)
Only requiring the 5th night to travel the excavator from our working area to the car park where it could be collected.

This contract was one of many carried out for Galliford’s on Railtrack sites.
All contracts we have completed have been as inaccessible as this one, all of which have been completed either ahead of program, or on program.
The other sites include:
Meols Cop Station, Southport.
Rainford Station, Rainford.
Sellafield Station, Sellafield, Cumbria.
Moston Station, Moston, Manchester.
Winsford Station, Winsford, Cheshire.

Approximately 60% of the above work were completed during the evenings.
Because of this the forward planning, sourceing plant, equipment, and labour was critical, if any of the above was unreliable, we could have easily lost one complete shift, which could result in falling behind program.
