Contract No 4:

Calderstones School, Liverpool:

Main Contractor: Jarvis

This contract involved the total demolition of a series of old school buildings. The buildings to be demolished were attached too, or very close too buildings that were to remain.
To ensure that attached buildings were left undamaged handwork was used to separate the two buildings.
Extreme care, and out of hours working was used to demolish section that were close to other buildings that were to remain.
Also in one corner of one section there was a Scottish Power sub-station. This sub-station was very delicate, so extra caution, and added protection was used during this very delicate phase of the demolition.

This school was (as rumour had it) the school where the late John Lennon used to attend. The building in the background, which was left intact has a memorial to John, and had been extensively re-furbished prior to demolition commencing, so the demolition methods had to reflect all added difficulties.

As with previous demolition contracts the 20 tonne excavator, and Selecta Grab were used to demolish, then separate demolition materials.

This contract was carried out during the summer holidays of 2003, we actually completed the works one week into the new term, this was only slightly over program, the reason for this was in fact certain areas were not emptied of the schools belongings resulting in our demolition starting a week late.

This contract was the first where we tried a new method of disposing of timber, that was clean, but not suitable for re-use.
We used a local company who provide large skips for this type of timber. Once filled the skips are collected and taken to the supplying companies depot in Manchester. The timber is processed, and then used in a number of ways, for instance for the manufacture of chipboard, and for animal bedding.
Although using this method of disposal is a little more time consuming there is a positive effect on the environment, I.E a reduction in waste sent to landfill sites.
